Developer Captain Sim

Add-on for FS FSX

The Boeing 727 is still a plane you need to actually fly, what one calls a “pilots plane” really. Oh yes there are plenty of gizmos aboard to help, but in essence you’ve got to do the work. This why it is so much fun to work with this simulation.

Flight simmers have one advantage that reality takes from us, we can request any type of aircraft available in our simulators and fly it any where and at any time. If you think that learning to fly this way is correct then you are only fooling yourself. It takes years of training to fly these planes and are no short cuts.

But simmer will get behind the controls of large commercial jetliners and try to learn on the fly. Performance and tests are meaningless. Frankly if you can’t get it on the ground then go back and try again and again. But while this freedom is part of the flight-sim game, it is not realistic flight simming at all.

The 727 from Captain Sim is a plane to really need to get to know. This is full of reality checks, great for testing procedure and navigation plus handling skills.

Here’s a checklist of what you should be doing while running this sim.

Basic Flight Maneuvers

Learn how to taxi, take off, climb out, turn, cruise, descend, approach and land. And if there is anything wrong with just one of the aforementioned, go back and do it again. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you can land it just because you can fly it straight and level.

Aircraft Operation

Simply said, you need to know how to operate the plane in question, get out the manuals.

Official Aviation Charts

Again, here is where reality comes in, try to get “real” charts to places you are unfamiliar with. The information you find on these charts will make the time invested into a flight reward you better. Spend some money for the real stuff.

Basic Navigation

Again you will need to know how to get there. You will be confronted with all types of methods, get to learn each one perfectly along with the classics.

Learn your instrument procedures, in the real world of commercial jet this form of flying is used more often than not. Especially if you are entering large airports. The ATC will be using IFR to help maintain some order, you will need to know the procedures well.

So lets go and look at the business end of the 727 during a cockpit set up. With your flight plan in hand verify fuel load, oil, oxygen pressure, and hydraulic fluid levels. This should backup what your F/E has already told you, but in my habit, always do these again yourself. As Captain you will also need to know if any maintenance is presently being done to the aircraft before you touch any switches. Again your F/E needs to have this information ready.

As you get seated, check your oxygen mask for safe operation along with its microphone. The look at your overhead panel and check #1 AUX & #2 Vertical Gyro, just make sure you can switch them should there be a failure in flight. Also check that all caps for switches are closed.

Now lets look at the forward paned, which has been exquisitely reproduced by Captain Sim. Check your Altimeter settings, Radar Altimeter, light bulbs, Clacker, RMI switches and V.G.

Moving to the Center Console, check that the throttles are freely movable and activate the gear warning horn system. Don’t forget the trim, see if it moves properly and that the trim cutout switches have been checked to make sure they stop all trim movement.

Now lets get the airspeed, EPR and elevator trim bugs set right for this flight. If you are working with a crew, be sure everyone has done their checklist. Only then can you proceed to the start up procedure and push back.

Once your positioned at the end of the runway you need to accomplish the After Start and Before T/O checklist, do not begin your roll before this has been completed. Be sure your Yaw Damper is operation and no popped CB’s. In a simulator you will not be confronted with popped CB’s as this relates to old wiring problems.

One you’ve climbed out lets work on some maneuvers. Typically a 180 deg. Reversing steep turns will give you some feel for the plane. We need to gain altitude while doing this so that we are set up for our stall series and recovery. Concentrate on a clean configuration in your turns. Here is the way to handle stall recovery close to the ground. At the first indication of stick shaker the thrust levers should be advanced to give go-around thrust and pitch the nose up. The wings should then be levelled and any descent stopped, adjust the pitch as required to return the aircraft to manoeuvring speed. The manual states that although less altitude is lost with the flaps down, if the flaps are UP recover the stall before the extending any flaps. During recovery, the flap position should not be changed. Pitch control may also be affected with the flaps extended as the aircraft will experience a large nose-down pitching moment at high angles of attack. This is due to airflow separation occurring initially on the inboard section of the highly swept wing, shifting the centre of lift outboard and aft.

To gain more ability you can now set up the simulator to have emergencies. These are Rejected T/O, V1 cuts, Fire Bells, Dual engine failure. The most exciting are Dual Engine Failures and CATIII Operations. If engines 1 and 2 fail you will have the most horrible situation ever, these are the engines that drive your hydraulics. Please note that in the 727 a dual engine failure with gear down and LED extended you will have no Go-Around capability anymore. CATIII landings must be shot by the Autopilot and require the FlightDirector. Good Luck!

My own high altitude experience in a 727 is to use a descent airspeed of 290 KIAS till you hit 10,000ft MSL, you then drop it to 250KIAS. As the aircraft vectors to approach you slow it down more and add flaps (30 deg.). At GlideScope intercept, drop the gear and your Before Landing checklist should be completed. When all is settled down you fly to runway on “bug” speed, this should be computed by the F/E. Please note that the use of speedbrake with the flaps extended is prohibited on the Boeing 727 and a warning horn Sounds. Speedbrakes have an appreciable effect on stick shaker speeds and initial buffets, but a lesser effect on actual stall speed. Angle of attack is higher at the same airspeed with speedbrakes up. Initial buffet speed is raised. Speedbrakes, when used with flaps down, shift the position of the wing wash relative to the tail such that deep stalls could be encountered with excessive use of up-elevator. DO NOT USE SPEEDBRAKES WITH FLAPS DOWN.'

Now back to basics;

Don't sleep while your Captain is.

Encourage your Captain to smoke.

It's hell to fly with a nervous Captain, especially if you're the one making him nervous!

Don't interfere if your Captain absolutely insists on making a fool of himself.

Live for another day;

Don't fly with a Captain nicknamed "Lucky";

Don't fly at night;

Don't fly in bad weather;

Don't mess with the red switches;

Never, ever eat a crew meal in the dark.

Keep your lousy attitude a secret.

Speak very, very softly when you speak to your Captain.

Don't make better landings than your Captain, until the last trip of the month.

Fun aside, this software has plenty of depth, there are hours of enjoyment packed into it. You should ber able to train performance to perfection with this kit, go do it.
